The similarities between both Ligeia and tuberculosis sufferers and vampires. The paper starts by documenting vampiric traits and their appearance in literature, starting with Henrich August Ossenfelder?s Der Vampir in 1748 up to Bram Stokers `Dracula` in 1897. It then cites various examples of how the character Ligeia could be seen as vampiric. The paper also looks in detail at the effects of tuberculosis and how it affects people both mentally and physically also the similarities between the image of a vampire and that of a tuberculosis sufferer. From the paper; `This paper will focus on the theme of vampirism in Edgar Allan Poe?s short story `Ligeia.` In order to make the paper more understandable and explain my research, I will begin by defining what characteristics constitute vampire-like qualities. Then, I will demonstrate how Ligeia meets those parameters. `The first recognizable literary work dealing specifically with vampires came in 1748 from Germany. Real Ghosts - What Are Ghosts Essays - English-language Films
Real Ghosts - What Are Ghosts I have chosen to do my book report on a book called... Real Ghosts. what is a ghost suppose to look like? First you may think of something in a white sheet with holes for eyes, you may think of a ragged figure dragging chains and moaning. Or an idea of a ghost may be a figure you can see through, something that goes in and out of rooms without needing to open doors. That is the way ghosts are usually described in stories or shown in movies. But real ghosts come in many different sizes and shapes. Sometimes they are strange and frightening looking. Sometimes they look very ordinary. It is hard to tell they are ghosts at all. Often ghosts cannot be seen, but are just heard and felt. This book is about real ghosts. Are ghosts real? At 3:25 pm an airplane crashes and the pilot is killed. But at the same time in another city, a lieutenant claims that he saw and spoke with the pilot. A judge says that he had a conversation in his home with a reporter at 1:30 the night before. But at 1:30 that night the reporter had died of a heart attack in his own bed. In an old mansion in england a photographer actually snaps a picture of a shadowy figure on a staircase. It is the "brown lady" of raynham hall. Each of these people claims that he really saw a ghost. In this book the author (daniel cohen) investigates many strange stories. Sometimes he uncovers a hoax, but other stories leave puzzling questions... Do spirits really haunt old houses? Can a human be transported back into the past? Are ghosts real? Return from the dead? A man named john thorne lived near an old haunted house. In 1958 he had an odd experience... He woke up in the middle of the night to find a strange woman in his bedroom. It was dark, but he could still see that she was wearing a long dress, the kind people wore a hundred years ago. Thorne turned the lights on, and the figure had disappeared..... On 1961 thorne's brother, william, came for a visit. On the first night william heard footsteps outside the door. When he looked out of the open door... He saw a woman in a long black dress holding a handkerchief in her hand. Suddenly the room became very cold..... The real exorcists and others? The exorcist was an extremely popular book. It was about a young girl who was "possessed" by the devil. It took a ritual called "exorcism" to drive out the evil spirit. An even more popular movie was made from the book. People thought that the movie and the book were true. They were not. The book was a piece of fiction written by william p. Blatty. But blatty's book was based on a real case. One of the reasons that the book and the movie were so popular, is that people thought they were actually a real case. Here we have to be very careful. "based on" in not "the same as. " the writer and the movie producers made many changes in order to make "the exorcist" more dramatic and exciting than the case that inspired it. In the book and the movie, the "possessed" subject was a young girl. In the real case it was a boy. And that was just one of the changes made. There were many, many, many more. A large part of the exorcist was not based on anything at all. It was just made up. One reason is that we really don't know a great deal about the real case. Very few records were kept. Not all of what few there have been made public. Some of those involved in the case have since died. Many others just don't want to talk about it anymore. Here is what we do know. The case began early in 1949. The possessed subject was a fourteen year old boy who was called douglas deen. He lived with his family in a suburb of washington d. C. The first thing the family noticed was strange noises coming from the boy's room. They suspected mice. Exterminators were called in but found nothing. And the noises continued... The disturbances became more violent. Heavy furniture moved back and forth. A bowl fell off the top of the refridgerator for no apparent reason. A picture

Curiosity Kits Neon and Magic Powerballs Review
Curiosity Kits' Neon and Magic Powerballs Review Curiosity Kits offers a science kit called Neon and Glow Magic Powerballs. The kit, for ages 6, lets you create your own polymer bouncy balls. What You Get and What You Need Most of what you need to make powerballs comes with the kit. You get: 4 molds to make different shapes of balls20 packs of crystals in 7 neon and glow-in-the-dark colorsresealable plastic bags so you can store your ballsinstructions You need to supply: cup of waterscissors to open the packageswatch or timerfoil or plastic wrap My Experience Making Magic Powerballs My kids and I made powerballs. They are ages 9-14, so none was as young as the lower limit listed on the product, but I dont think a younger child would have any difficulty with this project. Children younger than age 6 might have trouble pouring the crystals into the mold to make a ball or might be tempted to eat the crystals. The instructions for this kit are very clear and include pictures, so its very easy to get great results. Basically, here is what you do: Snap together the molds.Pour crystals (one or many colors, be creative!) into a mold until it is full.Immerse the filled mold in a cup of water for 90 seconds. (We just counted to 90.)Remove the mold from water and allow it to sit on the counter for 3 minutes (time didnt seem to be critical), then remove it from the mold and set it on a piece of foil or plastic wrap. When the ball is set or not-sticky, bounce it and play with it.Store each ball in its own plastic bag (included). Pretty easy, right? It didnt seem to matter if you left the ball in the mold longer than 3 minutes, but you do not want to leave the filled mold in the water longer than 90 seconds. If you leave the ball in the water too long the crystals will swell up and split the mold open. The mold will be fine, but you will get a seriously mutated ball. The balls bounce really high. If they get dirty, you can just rinse them off with water. The package said you could make 20 balls using the materials, but we actually got 23 balls out of the package. What I Liked and Didnt Like About Magic Powerballs What I Liked Easy enough even a child can make them. The project is quick. I would say you could go from opening the package to having a ball within 10 minutes. You dont need any strange materials. Get a glass of water and youre set.The project is very safe. Its safe to touch the materials. The balls are non-toxic.Clean-up was simple. Just wipe down your work surface with a damp sponge when you are done. The balls are exactly as described. They really do bounce up to 15 feet. They really are bright neon colors. Most of the colors glow very brightly under a black light. Some of the colors glow in the dark (green for sure, possibly pink). What I Didnt Like This is one of the best science activity kits Ive come across, so there isnt a lot I would improve. However, I wish the instructions had included some explanation of the chemistry behind making the powerballs. It also might be nice if the crystals came in resealable bags so that you didnt need scissors and so you could store materials in case you dont make all the balls at one time. Magic Powerballs Summary Would I buy this kit again? Definitely! This would be an affordable and fun party activity for kids. It is an enjoyable family science activity. Do my kids want to do this activity again? Yes. The balls do not last forever (instructions said they were good for about 20 days), so this is a project that can be repeated.

The Market Opportunities Available to Carrefour in a South Africa Assignment
The Market Opportunities Available to Carrefour in a South Africa - Assignment Example This paper provides a detailed outline of the market entry strategies that the Board of Directors should consider for entering the retail business sector in South Africa. It has been recommended that the joint venture would be the safest and most profitable method of market entry. Table of Contents 1 Brief Synopsis of the Issue 4 Recommendation(s) 4 Background 4 Company overview 4 Theories of international trade and investments 5 Analysis of Market Opportunities in South Africa 6 Company Situation Analysis 10 Analysis of various types of market entry strategies 13 Market entry Strategy: Joint venture 15 Reference List 17 Brief Synopsis of the Issue The proposed market entry strategy for Carrefour is joint venture since this is the best option available to the firm for minimizing threat involved in entering the new market and for gaining knowledge of the local market. Recommendation(s) South Africa is a developing country and the national government is making efforts to attract foreig n direct investment Carrefour is a multinational firm with advanced technological know-how Joint venture with a well performing local firm in the same business is the best strategy to enter the South African market Background Recently, Carrefour has made an unsuccessful attempt to enter the Russian market with the aim of establishing a hypermarket in the country. The causes of the failures have been found to be lack of potential demand (particularly for organic food items) and low opportunities for acquisition and growth. This paper presents a case study, which acts as the platform on which the company should build its strategy to enter the South African market. Through this paper, it has been recommended that Carrefour should adopt the strategy of a joint venture for entering the South African retail industry. Company overview Carrefour was founded in France in the year 1960 by two entrepreneurs, one textile retailer and the other a food wholesaler. In 1960, the first store was hig hly successful and it marked the beginning of the companyââ¬â¢s successful journey. In 1975, the company made its first venture outside Europe and opened a hypermarket in Brazil. Since then Carrefour has expanded its business across the globe. Presently, the company has 4635 stores in France alone and more than 5200 stores in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Caribbean and North Africa and Middle East (Carrefour, n.d.). However, in 2009, the company faced a setback while trying to establishing a hypermarket in Russia due to lack of demand for its organic food products (Indu, 2011). The company was forced to quit their business in Russia and exited after four months. It is currently considering South Africa as a prospective country for making investments. Theories of international trade and investments In the modern globalized business world, there is wide agreement on the benefits of international trade among the economist, politicians and academic researchers. Investments made in for eign countries are believed to boost up business operations around the world and also lead to economic progress of the host countries. These countries are encouraged to modify the economic policies pertaining to international trade in such as way, that they can promote international trade and investment.Ã

Battling Obesity in Adults with health promotion programmes Essay
Battling Obesity in Adults with health promotion programmes - Essay Example The research paper ââ¬Å"Battling Obesity in Adults with health promotion programmesâ⬠examines the unhealthy lifestyle habits and ways of preventing a serious contemporary public health issue, obesity. Obesity is becoming very common with the current lifestyles of people. Nowadays, life is made more convenient by technology and the accessibility of basic needs. For example, instead of walking to the store to buy things, one can just call for delivery. Instead of cooking food from scratch, one can just buy ââ¬Å"fast foodâ⬠or heat up instant meals in the microwave oven. These lifestyle habits are likely to cause weight gain in people especially if they do not engage in physical activities. If not controlled, it can even lead to obesity. It is posing a big health problem not only of the individual but for families and society in general. Overweight and obese individuals have an increased risk to illnesses and disease such as heart disease, stroke and other deadly diseases . Hence, a health awareness program for the prevention of obesity as well as some interventions to treat obesity should be put in place. It is part of the nursesââ¬â¢ duties to ensure the health and well-being of patients through preventative strategies such as health promotion. Since being overweight and obese is getting to be more common, nurses need to be educated on its risks, causes and prevention so they can explain it well to their patients, as well as practice healthy living themselves so as to keep physically fit. (Sellwood, 2013). With life/work getting more complicated and busy, people resort to fast food for convenience, but these are all filled with processed ingredients which are not healthy to consume (Tiggermann, 2004). Instead of such convenience food, nurses can advise their patients to eat freshly cooked food, fresh fruits and vegetables for better nutrition. Preparing food from scratch may take more time and effort, but nurses need to emphasize to their patien ts that these are better for them in the long run, as their health should be their priority. In order to be credible nurses, they need to model their conviction to be healthy. That is why they need to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills to implement appropriate health promotion programmes (Hayden, 2008; Azjen, 1985; Ewles & Simnett, 2004). Obesity exists when there is an excess fat in the body which adversely affects the health and well-being of individuals. (Mascie-Taylor & Goto, 2007). The body fat is measured with the body mass index (BMI). Brewis (2010) shares that when the BMI level of an individual goes over 25 kg/m2 , then he or she may be classified as overweight. If the BMI level reaches 30 kg/m2 and over, then it is already classified as obesity. Currently a major health problem, obesity contributes to increased morbidity and mortality among adults. It makes them more vulnerable to cardiovascular illnesses. The significant increase in mortality of obese patients with cardiovascular disease is a cause for alarm (Parsons et al., 2005). Obesity has likewise been associated with other medical conditions resulting in human suffering and health care costs, becoming an increasing burden to those afflicted with it, their families, and the government (Finkelstein et al. 2003). It is considered the fifth major cause of death globally as more than 2.8 million deaths annually result from this disease (WHO, 2011). It has also been reported that more than 23% of ischaemic heart disease, 44% of diabetes and 7% to 41% of some cancer burdens are caused or aggravated by obesity (WHO, 2011). From the latest update of the World Health

Becoming a Teacher Essay Example for Free
Becoming a Teacher Essay Never has it crossed my mindââ¬â¢s eye to become a teacher. I would choose any other field or career except it. In fact, after my high schooling, I was so undecided of what course to take, of which way to go as if I was in the crossroad Robert Frost is pertaining to in his poem, ââ¬Å"The Road Not Takenâ⬠. I was definitely certain I never wanted to be one; I would not get myself involved with it, not even in my wildest dream! But, should I say fortunately or unfortunately, because my relatives who are educators said I must be like them, and that I should follow their steps. According to them, there was no better profession for me other than teaching. Woe to me! My life seemed to be driven by my familyââ¬â¢s beliefs. I had to obey. I had no choice. So I had a plan. I would go against the current, regardless of my kin. They would be the ones to provide for my allowance and miscellaneous fee. I was by then a scholar, a grant my relative also worked out. At first, I was just planning to finish the first semester and then I would shift to another course but I never had the chance because they didnââ¬â¢t allow me to. I finished the degree with recognition though I never really liked it. For me, itââ¬â¢s better than not having a degree at all. After graduation, I took the examination not because of the excitement to be a ââ¬Å"professional teacherâ⬠but because it is the expectation from all the education graduates. I was so blessed to pass it at once. I had my license but I still got no plan to teach. I was working as a cashier in a gasoline station while my classmates were already teaching as PARA teachers. Whenever they see me, they would always ask when I plan to apply for ranking. I would only smile and say ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m waiting for the right time.â⬠Yet, at the back of my mind, was the fear of handling the obligation. Yes, I fear the responsibility of they say the noblest profession. Iââ¬â¢ve seen it from m y auntie. She was coming home late in the afternoon. She was staying up late at night because of lesson plan and some paper works to be done. I didnââ¬â¢t want to experience the same. Those were the reasons why I never wanted the course. But, I was reprimanded. That was the only time I was moved. I decided to process my application. So happy I was, because I topped the ranking and was immediately hired as a regular-permanent by the government, and I was summoned to practice my teaching craft and skills at Sotero Baluyot Elementary School. Teaching there was never easy for me. I had to travel for a couple of hours to come to school so I get home only during weekends. It was the first time I left home for days and to think that it would be for years, I felt even sadder. I did the works at my best though. I have to like it I know. I became friends to the parents and to the students and I started to love the job. There, I had a student who was visually impaired. Her classmates used to tease her ââ¬Å"bardoâ⬠which is an Ilocano term for ââ¬Å"dulingâ⬠. Because of that, she became a true loner. She rarely participated in class discussion though Iââ¬â¢ve seen a real potential in her. I said to myself I had to help her. I trained her to join the quiz bee. She got second place in the district level and became one of the participants in the division level. After that event, she became active in our class. Her classmates started to befriend her. Other teachers begun to notice her and became one of the best in their subjects. Pupils never tease her again. In the graduation day, she was an awardee. After the ceremony she and her mother came and thanked me. I had two more graduations when I decided to apply for transfer to my home base. Luckily, it was granted quickly. When the parents and the students knew that I would be leaving soon they approached me and asked if I could stay for some more years. Though they know that somebody was coming as my replacement, they say they would always prefer me. I was happy for their sincerity. I wanted to stay but my parents want me to be with them too. That night, was the only time I felt I AM A PROFESSIONAL TEACHER. Thoughts came back to my mind. The moments with the parentsâ⬠¦The experiences with the children..happiness..struggles..Somehow I made a difference in them and I know I am a professional. Yes! I have become a mother to lonely children, a doctor to those ill, a guidance counsellor to the erring pupils and a very jolly peer but , I am a professional teacher. I shape the lives of the young and impressionable children, inculcate values in them. I practice differentiated teaching styles so that students are learning best. I setup and design classroom to get and keep learnersââ¬â¢ attention. I control emotions in most stressful situations. I am accountable to teaching profession, to the pupils, my co-workers and the society. I have never dreamt of this path but with this responsibility comes great pride and joy because I am a teacher..a professional teacher.
